#Spotlight – This week we continue our celebration of Black History Month, looking back at the impact of African Americans on our National Pastime with “Baseball Firsts”.
1949 Don Newcombe becomes the first black pitcher to win Rookie of the Year Award (he would go on to win the MVP and CY Young in his career).
1951 would see Don Newcombe become the first black pitcher to lead the league in strikeouts and the first to win 20 games in a season.
1952 would see Joe Black of the Brooklyn Dodgers earn a victory over the Yankees to become the first black pitcher to win a World Series game.
