#Spotlight - Josh Gibson - Born on this date in 1911

Josh Gibson was born on this date 107 years ago!

He was known as one of the greatest power hitters and catchers in the history of baseball, and was the second Negro Leagues player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972 along with his "Thunder Twin" Buck Leonard.

Known as the black Babe Ruth, this editorial cartoon from 1972 celebrated his induction with a celestial shoutout from the Babe.

Harold Reynolds and Fran Charles talked about Josh (and Buck), and Harold showed this video of his tour of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, where Josh is featured as the Catcher on the Field of Legends.

Statistics were not easily collected in the Negro Leagues as witnessed in Josh's bio, but even Josh's Hall of Fame plaque acknowledges his almost 800 Home Runs!

In 2000, The Sporting News ranked Josh the 18th greatest player of all time. His legacy lives on in the great work being done by the Josh Gibson Foundation.

In honor of his Birthday, we put our #20 Strength in Numbers shirts on Sale for 20% off. Celebrate the greatness of Josh Gibson and wish him a Happy Birthday!
