#Spotlight - Major League 7 Collection - Eastern Colored League (1923–1928)

As part of our new collection, Major League 7 - today we celebrate the Eastern Colored League which played from 1923–1928.

BACKGROUND


MLB announced in 2020 that seven Negro Leagues would be elevated to "Major League" status. The seven leagues that comprised the Negro Leagues of 1920-1948 were the Negro National League (I) (1920–1931); the Eastern Colored League (1923–1928); the American Negro League (1929); the East-West League (1932); the Negro Southern League (1932); the Negro National League (II) (1933–1948); and the Negro American League (1937–1948).



EASTERN COLORED LEAGUE (1923–1928)


The Eastern Colored League featured among others:

  • Atlantic City Bacharachs

  • Baltimore Black Sox

  • Brooklyn Royal Giants

  • Cuban Stars

  • Harrisburg Stars

  • Hilldale Daisies

  • Homestead Grays

  • Newark Stars

  • New York Lincoln Giants

  • Washington Potomacs

LEAGUE CREATION


Founded in 1923 when team broke away from the NNL(I) to form the East Coast League, led by Hilldale, Bacharach, Brooklyn, Cuban, Lincoln and Baltimore.


CHAMPIONS

  • 1923 – Hilldale

  • 1924 – Hilldale

  • 1925 – Hilldale

  • 1926 – Bacharach Giants

  • 1927 – Bacharach Giants

  • 1928 – None (League broke up before a champion could be declared)
