#Spotlight - Monte Irvin - An Eagle before becoming one of the Giants of the Game

#Spotlight – This week we are paying tribute to the greats of the Negro Leagues and their post baseball careers. Today we salute Monte Irvin.

Upon retiring from a stellar career in both the Negro Leagues and the Major Leagues, Irvin would go to work for the Rheingold Beer Company before serving as a scout for the New York Mets.

In 1968 Monte was named as a Public Relations Specialist in the Commissioner’s office, making him the first African American to serve in such a position. He would serve as MLB’s representative when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s Home Run record. (The Commissioner’s absence would anger Aaron and fans alike)

He would end his Baseball career serving on the Veterans Committee for the Baseball Hall of Fame.
