#Spotlight - Satchel Paige - Movie Star

#Spotlight – Our next post career review is Satchel Paige. the face of the Negro Leagues would have just as colorful a post playing career as he did while playing. Paige would appear in the movie The Wonderful Country (with Robert Mitchum and Julie London).

He would become a Deputy Sheriff in 1968 in Missouri, which was designed to set Satchel up to run for the Missouri State Assembly, but was unsuccessful in his attempt.

Late in 1968, William Bartholomay of the Atlanta Braves would sign Satchel Paige to a contract to serve as pitching coach and pitcher to allow Satchel to receive his major league pension. Following Ted Williams 1966 Hall of Fame speech on the importance of including Negro League players, a 10 man committee was set up in 1969 to review the potential nominees. Satchel Paige was identified as the first candidate but had to wait for the 5 year period to end from the time he pitched for the Braves.

Satchel then became a regular on Television, appearing on a variety of shows before becoming the Tulsa Oilers pitching coach and then Vice President of the Springfield Cardinals.
